By dipping spun cotton yarn repeatedly in a composition of caustic soda while the threads are under tension, the fibres get thicker and stronger and becomes more lustrous than conventional cotton. The name of this proces is mercerising.

Characteristics of mercerized cotton:
- it is stronger 
- form-retaining (hardly shrinks or loose shape, hardly to no lint/fluff)
- more lustrous
- washing up to 60
- extremely suitable for baby clothes, baby blankets and toys
- /- it feels a bit harder than regular cotton
